Frequently Asked Questions What if I'm late? If you are late for school, you must check in at the office with the secretary. · 1st invalid late, student will receive a detention. · 2nd invalid late, student will receive a second detention. · Furthur lates and students parents will be contacted for an interview. · Valid medical excuses do not count as lateness. However, excuses such as "I slept in", "I missed my bus", or "I ran out of gas" are not acceptable. What if I'm absent? The office requires a phone call from parents for all absences. If this is not possible because of your parents' work schedules, a parental note should be brought in on the day of your return. Any absence which can not be verified as legitimate will be considered as truancy and be dealt with accordingly. Persistent truancies will result in a letter or call home followed by a suspension if the problem continues. What about smoking? A serious health concern, smoking, is forbidden anywhere on school property. Anyone caught smoking will be suspended. What about alchohol or non-prescriptive drugs? Anyone found using any such prohibited substances will be suspended indefinitely from school. (refer to Behaviour Code and the Board Policy on Substance Abuse) Do we have a dress code? YES, we have a very simple code which is based on good taste and decency. 1. Wear clothing in good condition (intentionally torn or frayed clothing is not permitted). Excessively baggy pants, tube tops, tank tops are not permitted to be worn. 2. Be neat and clean. (outlandish hair colours and/or styles are not permitted). 3. Avoid use of clothing/accessories with slogans or designs which promote or depict violence or substance abuse, are sexually explicit or racist in nature. (chains are not permitted). 4. Ensure that shorts and skirts are of "Bermuda short" length. 5. Head gear (caps) are permitted to be worn while in the hallways only. What happens if I violate the dress code? At the first offence you will be offered the opportunity to change if you have any other clothes with you. If you do not have clothes to change into, you will be offered clothes from the office or the opportunity to go home and change if your parents can be contacted. (no short shorts or skirts, sun tops, no baseball caps in class, no baggy pants, no wallet chains, no torn or frayed clothing, etc..) At the second occurrence you will be sent home as soon as your parents can be notified. Where can I eat? In the cafeteria and outside (in designated areas). If you leave the school grounds to eat your lunch, please be considerate of our neighbours and do not litter while on your way to and from school. What areas are out of bounds? When? During lunch hours the second and third floors are out-of-bounds unless you have a pass for the computer room or an appointment with a teacher. You are permitted to use the gym, the library, the cafeteria, the student lounge, and the guidance office.) All secondary one and two students are obliged to remain on the school grounds during lunchtime. What if I get sick while at school? Ask to be excused from class and come to the office. If you are too ill to go back to class we will attempt to contact your parents to arrange your transportation home or to the doctor. It is not reasonable to assume that you would spend an entire period in the washroom due to illness, as this will be treated as skipping. What if I have to leave school for an appointment? Bring a parental note to the office or have your parents call the school. Check out with the secretary when you leave and check in when you return. Failure to sign in and out properly will result in detentions being assigned after the first warning. Do I get a locker? YES, a locker will be assigned to you in September. You are to keep it all year. You are responsible to maintain both the inside and outside of this locker, which means keeping it free from graffiti, etc. Do not change lockers without permission as we may cut off your lock, and do not give your lock combination to anyone else. Please note that the school is not responsible for loss or damage to articles stored in lockers. Where can I keep valuables? At home! School is not the place for large sums of cash, expensive radios, jewellery, watches etc. On the odd occasion when you must bring something like this to school, you may arrange short term safekeeping in the school vault. What if I need to use a phone? A pay phone is provided for your use while at the school. The office phones are for staff use only or for emergency use. What if I am sent out of class? The teacher in charge of the class will notify the administration that you are requested to leave the class. Depending on the reason why you were sent out, the issue might be resolved by talking to the teacher, guidance counsellor, detentions, in school suspension or a suspension from school. |
